It pays to read your manual - 02-15-2006, 09:44 AM

Just thought I'd share-
I've read the manual for my 20D all the way through at least two times. And I've read the Magic Lantern guide all the way through. But today, I thought I'd thumb through the manual again, as my retention of information is not the best. I use the auto focus function AI focus, as I figured that it's the best of both worlds- when the subject is still, the focus locks, and when the subject is moving, the focus follows the subject. But I also use the center focus point only. So frequently, I have to recompose my shots with the shutter button held half-way down to lock the focus. But reading my manual today, I discovered that focus lock only works with single-shot focus mode. You learn something new every day. Now I'll be using single shot focus mode and switching to AI Focus or AI Servo only when necessary.

Troy -

I've worn the pages out on my manual. Does that make me a better photographer ? Maybe not, but to understand how your equipment works reduces some level of confusion and headaches.

A month from now, read it again. You'll be surprised then too I'm sure what you might gain from some little subtle function, at least I do.

I wonder if that applies to the 10D also? If it does, it might explain a thing or two....

My manual has become nightly reading material for me. After I've read a half dozen books with titles like "Skippyjon Jones", "Cars and Trucks and Things That Go" or "The Rainbow Fish". If my sons not asleep, the 20D Manual always does the trick. As others, I always pick up a few details I've overlooked.
