Question color calibration - 02-17-2006, 12:11 PM

i recently purchased the Pantone ColorVision software and calibration device. and i have also contacted my lab and received the digital ICC profiles for their specific printer. my question now is, how do i use these two pieces of data together? can i put the spyder contraption on my monitor and make it understand the ICC profile from the lab? how would i do that?

i need a technician.....

No, the Spyder is to calibrate your monitor then you need to set up CS2 (I only know how it works there) and put the ICC profiles in it and incorporate them into your print steam. I would think your lab would have a sheet on this.

Here's Epson's sheet on using ICC profiles:

In a nutshell this is what you do. Use the Pantone software/hardware to calibrate your monitor. This loads a color profile on your computer so that when software tries to display a true red it really is a true red. In other words it adjusts what your monitor displays so it's displaying the correct color. Then load the ICC profiles your printer provided you. In windows you can just right click on the ICC file and select "Install color profile". Then using photoshop or some color aware program make adjustments so your picture looks the way you want it (the monitor calibration make sure your monitor displays the correct colors). Use Image->Mode->Convert To Profile and select the profile your printer provided you. This will assign colors so that the printed output from their printers looks the way it should. Save the file (being sure to embed the profile), send it to the printer, receive the prints, and notice how closely the colors look to your on screen colors!

It wasn't my question but I appreciate the answers anyway. I'm still trying to learn color management.

You might want to split this off into a different thread for more replies.

I wish I knew how exactly it worked, but it's just modifying the profile that Windows uses in order to display colors correctly.

Did you calibrate the monitor in a dimly lit room? Did you make sure the colorimeter was flush on the LCD? I know on my old monitor, I had to tilt my monitor back in order to get the thing to have a nice fit.

When calibrating my monitor, I did it with the facotry settings that it recommends, and everything looks great to me.

Now on my old monitor I could never get good black levels on it, reguardless of calibration. It just wasn't capable of displaying all the low ends.

Not sure what else I can contribute here.... I know there are a few others with a Spyder.
