First Baby Portraits - 02-21-2006, 11:26 PM

Here's a link to a recent photo sitting with a new-born and big-sister.

Any thoughts on the layout/presentation is appreciated.

Any suggestions where I could improve on composition or lighting, etc., of the photo's is and always appreciated.

The children's mom wants some done in B&W, so I converted the same photo's in color to B&W.

There's two separate albums in this link, they are listed in the left hand column.

Thanks for your time and comments/suggestions.

I think they look great. You might get a better response if this was posted in the "People" forum for viewing.

I agree...I almost never go to links and I don't feel like wading through 30 pics to post comments. I think you might get more feedback by posting a few of your faves in the people section.

Those look great! I wish I would have taken some like that of my little man. He's so big now!

Randy,

You did a great job getting a lot of expressions with this session. I really like how you stuck around to get both awake and sleeping. Getting great shots with the big sister is both tough and essential but you definitely pulled it off! I also like your conversions. The skin tones look great.

There's only one picture that bothers me and that's the one of the baby crying, and not because he's crying, I think those shots are great, but something with the compositon doesn't feel right to me. Have you already cropped it? if so, I think I might put the baby at more of an angle, like with his head to the right instead of straight up because it doesn't seem like a very natural position for a newborn with the way the background works with it.

They are going to LOVE the one of the big sister kissing the baby!

Jen

PS. also, a great idea on including the collage. I think it would be worth it to add another one to the set of just the baby including the close-ups of the baby's parts...JMO of course!

Thank you everybody for your comments. The mom is thrilled with these, and so am I. I know we all work hard to try to do the best we can, so very sincerely, I do appreciate your comments and ideas.

I will post "my favorites" in the people section soon. I'm fighting some aligators at my normal job right now, so don't have a lot of time to pick and post.

Thanks again.

Question on your setup - 02-24-2006, 07:08 PM

Hello Randy,
Very nice infant pics. My wife and I are expecting a baby in May and I'll be doing some of these as well; I hope I can turn out images as good as yours.

May I ask what your lighting setup consisted of and how they were employed? The wrap-around lighting looks fantastic on the baby and I'm wondering if my 45" white satin umbrellas are large enough to accomplish that with reflected light only. Did you use 2 or 3 lights?

Again, great pics. Look forward to hearing from you. Best regards,
Terry

Baby Pics Lighting Setup - 02-24-2006, 07:57 PM

I know a lot of folks here use Alien Bee's, but I purchased some Novatrons a few years ago and have been pretty happy with the results I've obtained with them. Here's a brief illustration of what I did, and a little capture from the Novatron website about the heads. These are very light and have "tipped" over a couple of times and landed on tile floor and even a concrete floor. Only damage was the modeling light busted. The flash-tube keeps on 'clickin'. Although my heart stopped. Hope this helps.
