Boat composition help - 02-24-2006, 02:25 PM

My brother has recently purchased a fancy new skiing boat to sink his money into. He's asked me to take some shots so he can show off to his less fortunate friends. I've never shot any large vehicle before so I'm looking for advice on composition, intresting details to look for, setups, whatever you can think of, etc.

Thanks
Dale

Best advice I can give, Is to beware of you backgrounds, keep them simple, and approach from many angles. Most boats require unique compositions to get the best out of them. So experiment!

Since it's a ski boat, if their is a 2nd boat available, try getting some shots at speed, with your brother at the helm, and drag the shutter a bit to emphasize speed... Helicopters make for good platforms as well for this type shot...

Here is some old stuff just for ideas, not the best...

1)

2) The Background in this (the other boat) ruined what it could have been. . .

3) Not quite a Ski boat... But try some unique angles.

4) - dont forget to take pictures on board, and under way!

5) Experiment, sometimes it works out well, sometimes it does not...

Ryan has some great suggestions. I shoot huge vehicles for a living - Recreational Vehicles, and it's not always easy. Just really watch your backgrounds with the boat, as was suggested. You might consider shooting from a small boat alongside the big boat, while it's out on the water, and away from shore.

Shooting from a second boat is an excellent idea and I think that might be do-able.

Also don't ignore being in the (shallow) water if possible. Of course watch out for your equipment or bag it.

Check out the galleries at www.dallaswakeboarding.com - they have a ton of cool boat shots in the galleries that show off the wakeboard/ski boats really well!

My best suggestion . . . fill the boat with 3-4 lovely bikini-clad "models" - always makes the boat look better!
