laptop calibration - 03-09-2006, 11:16 AM

Ok here is my first, of what I am sure will be many, dumb questions. I have a Dell laptop, with their super brite screen, but when I do all the corrections in PS and try and print the picture, it always comes out dark, but if I turn down the screen, I can not see what I am doing.

Anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this?

First go to this web page http://www.normankoren.com/makingfineprints1A.html
Second, read the entire page before doing any adjustments.
Third, Adjust the contrast to 100% (usually not possible on a laptop)
Fourth, Adjust the brightness to get Gamma at 2.2

Turn off any ambient light auto adjustments if you have them (Mac)
Enjoy your new environment.

Bring it over next time I have the calibration tool and we'll get the colors right too.

I have the exact same problem with mine... its always brighter on my screen than in print or other monitors..

If you are printing the pictures from Photoshop (PS) most likely, you have the colour management setting set up wrong. The quickest way to test it to select ”print with preview” in PS; under the advance tab I think turn colour management off then go to you printer pref and set the printer to 2.2 for PC or 1.8 for mac and try printing. It will take some tweaking but your be a lot closer.

When I get back to the studio I see if I can find a link I have that has a video that show the correct way to setup colour management in PS.

It is somewhat possible but tough to do this with laptops.

For most laptops if you adjust the viewing angle the colours and brightness change significantly, that should give you an idea of what you are up against when it comes to calibrating such a screen.

Yea but its all I have right now, so it will have to do. If I get in a jam I will go to my brothers and use his Mac. But right now I don't have anything worthy of that.
