Help: First food shoot - 03-12-2006, 03:22 PM

OK, I was supposed to only take a picture of some kids in western wear, but now I have to shoot some pics of food. Does anyone have any suggestions for shooting a pic of ribs?

Thanks,
Lisa

Wish I had some really great technical advice for you, but I'm afraid ribs are going to look disgusting no matter how you approach it. What kind of lighting do you have?

This QVC page has a half way decent shot of BBQ ribshttp://www.qvc.com/asp/frameset.asp?...OVMTC=standard
All the other shots I'm finding on line are very poor or show the ribs being cooked over hot coals-WHICH YOU REALLY DON'T DO UNLESS YOU LIKE DRIED OUT TOUGH RIBS!

Really you most likely will have to coat them with about 3 times as much sauce as you normally do to just get some definition to them.

Why not try a shot where the ribs are partly pulled apart showing the bone and the change in the color of the meat?
You probably need to put something else on the plate that has some color contrast.

GOOD Luck!

Also be sure that they put some heavy grill marks on them! Tell them it will help in the photo to show strong grill markings.

BBQ sauce and vasaline mixed (havnt tried it but I know it would work) that way you dont get that dried look over time and also your sauce wont run as bad and pool in one place. Grill marks as DEMDeepEllumMusic said.

I think you'll be OK, they have a thin candy shell. I'm surprised you didn't know that.

Most food photography has horrible things going on - mashed potato in place of ice cream, plastic stand-in models for hamburgers (though with McDonalds, they might taste better than the real product), lots of vasaline and other oils used in place of the real products that can't handle hot studio lights.

A messy business which requires food stylists and the like as well as photographers in a lot of cases. Also presently afflicted with a bad case of the 'ridiculously shallow depth of fields'

I was thinking glycerin instead of vaseline, I think vaseline may give you an off color.

Yeah food photography has a boatload of tricks and don't even try to shoot edible guacomoli !

Need to PS a bit to tone the white plate down a bit in the bottom of the frame.
Why did you post this before I had dinner? Now I am more hungry!
