Under Exposed Art - 12-30-2004, 07:03 PM

I was experimenting in the darkroom one day and came across a cool technique. I would underexpose the print, then outline the image with a fine tip marker.

Here is the orginal shot with correct enlarger exposure:

Here is the shot under exposed, and outlined:

doesnt look like it took him long. He was uber detailed. Probably about 10 mins at the most. cool shot though, kinda looks like an ad for a magazine or something :D

It did not take too long to outline. Maybe 10-15 minutes or so.

I printed it on matte paper so that the ink will have a more defined line.

I have done several other shots this way, but this one was the first one that turned out well. The trick is getting the exposure right to provide the gray tones for the shadows.

I have seen other photos done this way on photoshop, but I think it is fun creating directly on paper.

Here is a similar example using Photoshop. PS looks for gradients (edges) in the image and draws lines at these edges, thicker lines for larger gradients.

I guess you could then overlay this on the original image.
