There are a number of options, one of which is Nikon View that probably came with your camera. One of the nicest FREE apps is Rawshooter Essentials that can be downloaded at www.pixmantec.com . It's not only a viewer but an nice editor as well.

Well, if you're using Windows you can use Explorer - after you install the Microsoft RAW Image Thumbnailer. You can download it free from http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...photo/raw.mspx

It should have no issues reading a NEF... and there's nothing new to buy.

Tammie
(assuming a Windows machine)
Please try the Adode Bridge. I've not used RawShooter, but do have and use Bridge. It's really great for a quick review of your images and has no problem with NEF files (even 12+megapixel files!). There are so many options with it that you may need some help getting started. You should have access to the Total Training disk that came with CS2. It has a good tutorial on how to use the Bridge.
I admit that I don't use any tool other than Windows to transfer my images. I just open "my computer" find the files either on my camera or CF card reader, select them and drag them to a folder of my choice, usually in my "my pictures" folder in a newly named subfolder for each download. Bridge can look into any folder on your computer or connected to your computer, so you could actually look at your images in your camera if you chose. (Your camera battery would suffer.)
TIFF files are usable in CS2 and are not compressed, so no data loss. As you now know, they are hugh. You can conver TIFF to Jpeg in CS2. If you're going for web posting of the Jpegs, you may want to downsize the images before you convert them. Use CS2 for that and the conversion. If you try to go start to "save for web viewing" in CS2, you'll get a funky message if you don't downsize first. For this site I've tried 600X800 pixels, downsizing using "bicubic sharper".
The reviews of Bridge are glowing and I would have to add my favorable comments to those of others.

Dazed and confused,
Tammie | haven't used RAW shooter in a while since I drank the koolaid and went to ACR and Adobe Bridge but when you do the batch convert, it should be an option to convert to jpg and allow you to choose the file size as well. I'll check it tonight when I get home and post again

If you're just wanting to look at the pictures from your NEF files I'll reitterate what Jesus (LoungeLizard) said - Microsoft RAW Image Thumbnailer. Don't let its name fool you into thinking it will just display thumbnails (although it does do that in Windows explorer). You can also open a NEF file and it will display a full screen image in a window. I believe you can also use filmstrip mode in Windows Explorer (the folder viewing app, not Internet Explorer the web browser) but I'm not certain of that.

Dazed and confused,
Tammie | Hi Tammie,
I am sorry i cannot tell you how to do the conversion on rawshooter. But to answer your question on what is tiff, in simplest form, its just an uncompressed image file that is supported by 99% of the image viewers in the market. The filesize is pretty huge though. I use Tiff to store my important images cos raw standard keeps changing and God knows if 20 years down the road there would be no more software that could open up my raw files.
Also, if you have adobe CS2, you can download the latest camera raw plugin and install it and bingo, you can setup batch process to convert it to raw.
