The most convenient way would be to hook them up to the same network and then copy and paste ... I am assuming we are talking about gigs of data. If not, then a card reader (about $20) could be used to transfer data from one to the other if you have USB ports on both.

That's about all I can offer ...

Edd is right. I use a USB thumb drive if I have less than 1G to transfer. More than that I rely on the network and drive sharing. On the Mac I use a program called ChronoSync to manage folders that I keep synchronized between the iMac and the PowerBook. YMMV.

If you do go the USB route, be aware of whether or not your computer's USB ports and your drives or card readers support the latest protocol... I have an old USB 1.0 card reader and it takes ages to transfer files.

One of the guys in the office bought a 4-gig CF card to use as his easter-egg basket to transfer images.

He doesn't shoot with it...just uses it as a transfer device.

CompUSA has a good under $10 USB 2.0 card reader which is extremely fast. My old readers were taking 25+ min to download a 2 gb card. This one does is it under 2 min.

If you don't want the card route and don't have a network you can use what is called a cross-over cable to "network" one computer directly to another thru their ethernet ports. In theory it can be done with USB cables but I don't think the reality is here yet.

Also you can send huge files as attachments thru IM - normal email would block them.

Another possibility is to use a cheap laptop harddrive in a USB case - probably save you a few hundred bucks over a big memory card (40G drive is $60, USB2 external enclosure $20 which gives you 40G of plug'n'play external storage for $80).

The options are many but the simplest is the cards :)
