Raw Shooter Premium anyone using it...? - 04-13-2006, 09:42 PM

I just got it and I will have to say it is a nice little program and the conversions are very good. In fact I think they are better then CS2 and it is easy to use.

The basics menus and workflow take about 20 min. to get on top if but its really easy to use after that first 20 min.
The conversion is a little slow but it works in the background to when you are batch converting.

Who is using it and what do you think of it.

I used the free version and loved it until I got the hang of Adobe Bridge and ACR...it is a great program but as you said the conversion factor is kinda slow, but it makes some very nice TIFF files

I use the premium version and love it. I really don't do any other post processing on my files except for RS. Well, I sometimes run them through a different noise reduction program if I'm shooting my daughters gymnastics at ISO 800 - 1600 on a 300D. ( Sure wish I had the money for that 70-200 2.8)

Raw Shooter has a million different options that I still only use some of. I have started really using the curves functionality and that is fantastic. I also think the color control is far better than the free version. Skin tones seem to be really good with the saturation at -80 or so and vibrance at +5 - 10.

I just use bridge and ACR. I've used capture one, raw shooter, breesesys, DPP but find after learning how to use bridge and ACR, and particularly with CS2, now that you can run ACR independently of Photoshop, that I can get everything I need done in two apps without adding extra in to the mix.

RS was always interesting but too clunky to make me want to use it.

I have been using RSE for sometime now. I am used to the workflow now. I use RSE and NCapture for the RAW workflow. I have PSP-X for jpg workflow. Yes I still want CS2. Probably by the time I can afford it - It will be called CSXXX or something like that. LOL.

I have been trying to decide if I want to buy RSP. (Tried the demo awhile back).

Has anyone used RSP with the Color Engine Add-On. And does that make a difference? Worth the extra $$$?

I have it and use it occasionally. It does a nice job, but when I'm in a hurry I seem to revert back to C-One. The C1 conversions certainly do take longer, but I find I can run through, and correct a batch of pics faster in C1. I really need to take time to get used to the correction process of RSP, but C1 was such a snap for me to get used to, and most other converters haven't come as easily!

You might also want to take a look Bibble Pro from Bibble Labs http://www.bibblelabs.com. It is made in Texas and does a great job with single and batch conversions. It has "Perfectly Clear" and "Noise Ninja" technology built in. Another positive is that it doesn't make any changes directly to your original raw files, allowing you to always be able to revert to the original image.

I've tried NikonCapture, Capture 1, ACR, Bibble and a few others but I really like Raw Shooter. Sometimes on very tricky images I might try NikonCapture as well but I much prefer Raw Shooter and went into a big sulk when I got my D200 and it wasn't supported. I forked out for Colour Engine - is it better ? I think so but then you can probably achieve the same results in Photoshop.

I don't find it slow - I tend to not mass convert 100s of images and I can preview and select which one I want from within Raw Shooter.

When Nikon Capture NX comes out I'll be trying that.

I am very interested to see NCNX.

Should be coming out soon as it is now Spring 2006 and based on the expected temp on Sunday I think we are now in Summer 06. LOL.

They all do about the same thing you'll find one your comfortable with and use that one the most. I use acr but have used all the others mentioned above minus any Nikon ware. Just use what you know or learn a good work flow.. Its all personal opinion..

I've been using Raw Shooter Essentials for the last year or so and I really like the interface and speed compared to Nikon Capture. My only complaint is when I shoot with a custom WB on my D70 it doesn't seem to transfer into RSE, so I end up having to try and get it right in the software.

Am I missing something, or is just the way it is. And more importantly, does the premium version address this?

Greg

Just double checked - with my images (D100, D2X and D200) RSP does import the colour temp and tint whereas RSE does not.

Rawshooter Premium has been my choice for a long time. It is much better for me than any of the others.
