What conditions were you shooting in? Inside/outside?

Kimberly, I can't see any noise in that picture - it's too small. Can you post a small (400 pixel x 400 pixel) piece of the original un-resized picture?

it is really weird.. look like either back focus issue or it is because of auto mode... but it might be the lens... don't expect much quality from kit lens...IMHO

p.s. at least shoot in AV or M and if you have backlight, you need esxposure compensation, camera's metering sytem is prety stupid sometimes

lens and noise - 04-16-2006, 09:16 PM

I can agree with that. I shot with the 18-55 kit lens for a few months, and noticed after getting the Tamron 28-75 there was considerable less noise even in the higher ISO ranges.

Although a new lens may not be feasible I'd recommend it or try borrowing one for testing to see if it makes a difference.

Oh it can produce some very nice high ISO pictures. Don't judge the camera after a poor photo. Just take a look at Abels concert photos. Shooting conditions don't get much worse than that and they look really good.

IMO shooting in P mode is not the way to go. I'm far from a professional or anything close to one, but I shoot in M mode most of the time just so I know what I am selecting and I know what I did wrong or right... Make sense? If you use P mode you have very little control over the shot if any and if the camera's metering system is fooled then you get what the camera thinks is right and in this case you see what can happen. My two cents....

Looks to me like for whatever reason the camera focused on the foliage. You didn't accidentally select a manual focus point did you? Wouldn't be the first time I did that with my 20d....

Justin, dat is a good point...I never use multiple point adn didn't even think about... when you use P or auto mode, I think cam automatical use all point.. in manual or AV or S you can select which one to use..

in case of above pic.. it could be...the reason.. cam focused on top point ... which might be background...

it is looks to me personaly either back focus lens issue or cam focused on background...

ADVICE...start playing with manual modes, AV, M, S...exposure conmensation, white balance.etc... you will find big diff in pic quality

as far as high ISO... indeed 20D or all DLSR from Canon nadle it prety good..(no offence to Nikon guys) I shot with 1600 and even 3200 .. you deff need some noise reduction software, but over all quality is much much much better then older generation DLSR from canon or any other brands

IMHO

Another thing to try is shooting in RAW and seeing if you can get a better image converting with DPP or whatever program is shipped with the camera. The in camera JPEG processing does have a tendency to introduce artifacts.

Is there anyway a noise program can salvage these?

If so which one?
