help me with black and white - 04-20-2006, 09:45 PM

Is it possible for this particular image to look good in black and white? The customer mentioned wanting black and white pics. Now I am wondering if she might like the way that looks better. You never know. But my version looks awful! I like the color.

I have access to a channel mixer in PSE, but don't really know how to use it. I can play with it but didn't like anything I did.

I played with it but I am not sure it works, I think the it makes the darker dogs too dark.

I think the answer is yes - and you've seen one example. Play with it. Adjust the contrast. If the dogs are too dark, dodge them some. B&W means different things to different people!

Thanks Jesus, you know more about this than I do. And Laurie, thanks a bunch! That was quick. That looks better than what I did, so I'll try to re-create it, and maybe dodge the dogs a little.

So much PP work, feeling like I suck.

Ooh, thanks Steve. I think that's good. The high green rating fixed my problem with the shirt; it kept coming out dark.

Here's a version with high contrast - I posted earlier this week in this forum with the method. I generally like high contrast B&Ws but it might not be what you or the customer is looking for.

I like the look it gives the dogs, but to me it blows the outline of the woman behind them.

Thanks for your samples everyone. It helps me to see the different versions and I came up with something l like. I found I had to go back to the original and darken the shirt because when I made it black and whote, the shirt got splotchy. I sent her a sample, so we will see what she says! To me the color version is much better, but she mentioned BW in the first place.

At least when/if I re-shoot, I will have a better lens. Got the Canon 17-40 on order.

I have a couple different ones for ya. I cleaned up the color one just a little and did some work to her eyes. he face is just a little dark but i think that's from the compression...
