Nikon D200 Tips - 05-07-2006, 04:32 PM

Howdy All,

I was wondering if any one using the D200 has any tips on setting the different "Banks" for Landscape, Portrait, and All around Shooting? I had downloaded the "Nikonians Spreadsheet" and found it to be very useful, especially since I was unfamiliar with the Nikon Menu System, and still learning after a couple of months I have been pleased with about 60% of the results, but would like to try and get a few more keepers, especially low light, and using higher ISO's, so your help on this would be great appreciated.

We are getting ready to go on Vacation and just wanted to check with Ya'll to see if you had any tips or suggestions.

Thanks in Advance

Craig, do you happen to have a link to the Nikonians spreadsheet?

I think you'll be OK, they have a thin candy shell. I'm surprised you didn't know that.

I agree, the spreadsheet is a good way to start.

What settings are you looking for? Shooting or photo enhancement?

Howdy Steve,

Shooting, I was wondering what folks consider to be the "Best" setting for shooting Landscapes and Historic Buildings?

I will ask about Photo Enhancement when I get back

Thanks again.

Okay, here are some of the "refinements" I've made. I've fine tuned my exposure to -1/6, and now use the Wide AF setting for almost everything except portraits, macros, or super crucial dof focus stuff (and need a smaller AF spot). The reason I use Wide is that I feel it's more accurate overall than the narrow setting. Thom's D200 ebook explaind that the D200 actually only has 7 AF areas, not 11 and that the extra 4 af spots are made by sub dividing 2 side af areas in to 6. I use focus priority on for everything, although it can flub you up for high speed sports.

As far as image settings, for landscapes I use sRGB III, ehanced tone, normal contrast, and med-high sharpening. This will give your landscapes a velvia feel coming straight out of the camera (jpg or in Nikon Capture for Raw).

Not really sure what else, most of my other settings are more personal preference than really effecting the camera's output or capability.

Howdy Steve,

We are going to be staying in Cascais, just South of Lisbon, both KK and I are really excited. Just so much History, Old World Charm, and Scenery. We will be basing out of there and will probably do a couple of nights up in the Northern Region near Ribalonga, and then a couple of nights farther South East. KK's Cousins will be our TourGuides and so we are just "Going Along for Ride"

I visited the Azores just briefly in 1973 on a stopover on my way to my Duty Station in Germany.
