I usually size mine to 800 pixels on the long side and save to jpg, quality 8. That usually does it.

The first thing you need to do is to make sure the width and height are also within guidelines (900 pixels). What I do is got to Image> Image Size Then in the dialogue box I usually just set my longest side to 890 pixels and let the program take care of the calculation for the remaining side. This will get you halfway there. Then when I go to save for TPF I do a "Save As..." and in the dialogue box I take the jpg image quality down a bit through the JPG Options until I am under the kb restriction. The size shows up near the bottom that dialogue box but I have found I need to go a bit under what CS2 says it is to get it to meet the TPF limits.

On Edit: Roy, you beat me to it! I was busy flapping my fingers.....

But Pete, your answer was in such precise detail. I know what I said in mine but Jerry is probably saying.... What is Roy talking about?

I make a copy or original - resize copy to 800 (longest side) - save for web - adjust quality slider. I have found by this way you can keep your photo at high dpi and have smaller enough for posting.

Yes, set your image resolution to 72 in the image size dialogue box THEN set your long side to 900 pixels or less. When saving JPG's for web viewing there is nor appreciable difference between quality 12 or quality 10 but you will see the size drop dramatically. I usually end up around quality 8 or 9 with a 900 px wide image.

I'm sure someone will jump in here if I am wrong, but MOST monitors display at 72dpi so saving the image at a higher resolution won't have much effect when displaying on the web with our 900px limit.. I believe for the forum 72dpi will do the trick. Leslie, for your uploads to an agency then that 240 is about the same as I send for items to be printed. Resizing can be confusing, especially when resampling is involved. I'll see if I can't find some good references.

Well true but really when saving a picture that will be displayed on the browser the dpi makes no difference. No browser that I know of (IE, Firefox, Opera, Safari, Mosaic, Lynx ) cares about the dpi of the picture. It just displays the number of pixels in the picture on the monitor whatever the monitor's resolution is. In other words an 800 x 800 pixel image will take up exactly 800 by 800 pixels on the monitor no matter if the picture is saved with 72 dpi, 300 dpi, 1 dpi, or 10000 dpi.
