Photoshop CS problems - 04-06-2005, 11:41 PM

I seem to keep having problems.

I recently upgraded from 7.0 to CS.

Problem 1- I used to right click the picture and use the "open with" photoshop command. Now all is get is "this jpg is not an win32 application". So I have to open with imageready and then go to photoshop.

Problem 2- The pictures that are edited are grayed out in the thumbnail. Half of the picture is just gray.

Problem 3- When I save as copy, now it does not put in "copy" to the file name.

I have Win XP Pro SP2, had 7.0 all worked perfect. Now with CS it sucks. I have checked and downloaded any patches or updates.

I'm not sure about the first two problems, but here's my answer to the third one. I have found that PSCS won't put the word "copy" in the file name unless you save the jpg in the same folder the original jpg is in. If you save in a different folder, the "save as a copy" doesn't do anything.

prob 1, same here.. i just use ''open with''. if it's not there then browse to the CS.exe file and choose it. it should put it in the options then.

for problem 2, this is a shot in the dark, but I had something similar happen to me. I was editing RAW fils and converted them to jpeg and they worked fine on my laptop but the same program would not work on my desktop. After an hour of troubleshooting, the only difference I could find was that the Desktop has an AMD processor and the laptop has an Intel processor. I know you said that PS7 worked fine, but sometimes these programs are processor sensitive...

This sounds like the file extension is not registered with PSCS. To fix this, go into Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, find the file extension (you may have JPEG but not JPG or jpg), select it, click the "Change" button for "Opens with", find Photoshop CS, and select it. You should be back in business.

Is this within the PSCS Browser? If so, it takes a while for the images to get refreshed. Try refreshing and see what happens. If not, can you provide some more info - possibly even a screen shot?

I think this was addressed already.

Hope this helps.

OK...if you go there and the file extension is not found, add it as a new one. When you're in the "add" dialog, click on the "Advanced" field and go from there. It should look like this:

I have asked a few questions before and they always get answered. All of my problems are gone. From adding the file extension to getting a setting from Adobe about my AMD processor.

Thanks, I am up and runnning fine. Until my next question!

i dont really know about the other problems, but.. dude.. GET RID OF SP2... kill it with a quickness.. it murders your system.... lol

when i installed it, NOTHING worked anymore...

you should go to microsoft's website, and read about all the things it hijacks in your computer, and lets you not make use of anymore... you'd be surprised.. and you never know.. that may solve some of your other problems as well.. if you have any

I beg to differ on this. You should run with the latest level of maintenance from Microsoft - just don't let it install fixes for things you don't really need. Never let it install automatically, always select the fixes - but keep yourself protected by running with the latest maintenance.

It got a bad rap when it first came out, but being intimately familiar with it, it wasn't SP2 at fault - it was just crappy programming practices on a lot of people's part. SP2 just shut the door on those bad practices.
