Looks like a fisheye upclose. Maybe using extension tubes with it.

Something I heard about and have been meaning to try is to buy a wide eye side fisheye Peephole for doors and place that in front of a P&S and see how that looks.

I am thinking about buying a fisheye. But I wanted to be sure you can do this with a fisheye...

I'd almost say it's an ultra wide vs a fisheye in that first link, only because there's not a ton of curvature (of course you'll see that more the closer to the frame edge you get). The 2nd link looks more fishy to me. ;)
Either would do the trick, the fisheye will probably be cheaper to buy too.

You don't need a fisheye lens... but you do need a wide angle or super wide to get it done. The trick here is to use the wide lens as close as you can get to the subject with as small an aperture as you can manage. The closest objects look larger than the distant ones...

You can do a similar effect in PS, but I never think it looks as good as the real thing...

Canon's 10-22mm lens will do exactly what you want and work perfectly with your Rebel XT. Plus, the zoom range makes it more versatile than a fixed width fisheye. Just do what Peter mentions and you'll get the effect you're looking for.

12mm shot taken with a Tokina 12-24 on a 30D. Very good lens if you want to save a $ and can live with 12 vs 10

16mm Zenitar at2.8.. If I had some extension tubes I could have gotten alot closer I took some with her nose almost touching the lens tho not in focus had the same appearance.

I agree you can get this effect with a rectilinear super-wide such as the 10-22. The effect will be even more extreme with a fisheye though. Compare FOV, you get 180 degress with the 10.5DX Fisheye, versus 95-105 degress with the superwide zooms.

You can get that effect with either wide angle or fisheye.

Here is one with my old Konica-Minolta A200 with a wide angle adapter.
(pay no mind to the fake PS blur.... ...)

And here is a cat with the fisheye.

Yeah, I believe the first picture linked in this thread (and maybe the second) were just wide angle lenses. Here's an example where I used a 16-35 f2.8 (a rectilinear lens) at 16mm on a 1.25 crop sensor.
