Proofs vs. Prints - 06-22-2006, 10:05 PM

I tried posting this in the DFW folder since I was pricing a local lab, but I have since found the same descriptions all over the net and have gotten very little response.

Can anyone explain the difference between a proof and a print when looking online at lab's prices for printing? The proofs are usually a third of the cost of the print for 4x6's but what is the difference? I am wanting to have some images printed at 4x6 for portfolio use and then be able to pick which ones I want larger. This sounds like a "proofing" situation, but I am not interested and would rather pay the higher price if it is on cheaper paper, a lower quality, or if it has PROOF written across it.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I havn't been able to find an answer.

I've always used "cheap" printers but this is what WHCC (pg 9) says in their price book.

Thrifty Digital Proofing is perfect for occasions when proofs are still necessary. Thrifty Digital Proofs are economical and delivered quickly. Quality is no different than Thrifty output, we are passing the savings of large, single size small print orders on to you! Kodak Professional Lustre or Glossy paper available.

• No color correction of files
• Files must be organized in folders by print size
• One print made from every file submitted
• All prints are identified with the file name on the back of the print and your studio name
• Files must be exact size at 300 PPI and in Level 10 standard JPEG format (in most cases scaled down camera files are fine as long as you realize the cropping parameters)
• Files must be saved with a valid ICC profile embedded.

Why is Thrifty Proofing less expensive than Thrifty output? Is there a quality difference?

We are able to offer low prices on our Thrifty Proofing because proofing orders are more cost effective to produce than a Thrifty order. Proofing orders are always one size of prints, that can always be printed on the most efficient piece of equipment. The only finishing service available is texture, which means all proofing orders are very simple and similar to each other.

Can I submit non-proofing orders through Thrifty Proofing to save money?

Yes, as long as you realize our minimum order requirements. Each proofing order can only be one size, and must meet or exceed our $12 minimum order. Multiple proofing orders cannot be combined to meet a minimum order. Proofing only has texture available for finishing, no mounting or lustre coating is available on proofing orders.

Keep in mind that this differentiation may only be for WHCC. Another lab may create proof prints through another process that is not as high quality.
