This is second-hand info... a friend of mine signed up for that course... he said it was "OK". The information is all good and accurate, but it seemed a little expensive when compared against buying books and reading the material... granted, you don't have an "instructor" critiquing your progress, but you could get the same kind of thing from a local club or TPF...

He also told me "You get out of it what you put into it"... if you've got the time and you can learn like that, go ahead...

I've checked it out but never done the course myself... in the end, I decided against it.

Thanks for the response I believe that i would put in the time, especially for that amount of money, however I've been on forums like this one and a few others for at least 3-4 years and have never heard of NYIP till last week. So was just wondering how it rated with folks. With my schedule I would have up to 5 days a wk to commit. I know I've learned quite a bit from just going to a book store and reading for a few hours, maybe i should stick with that? thanks peter

My opinon? Stick with Barnes & Noble... if the book sucks, you can return it... I don't remember what the return policy was with NYIP, but it seems like they charge you a butt-load of cash and you've got to pay it all...

Just my 2-cents...

I've heard good things about NYIP. The folks who have done the course have been pretty happy with the attention they have gotten and the feedback they get. Some have said that they spend a lot of time on basic photo stuff, but I guess many neophytes need all the basics they can absorb.
If you are serious about learning the nuts and bolts of taking good pictures, I think the course is good.

I have a good friend who completed the course several years ago. She was very pleased with it. She loaned me her books and materials, which I am in the process of looking through. There's some good stuff here. I'm looking into it myself. Unfortunately, there's about a million other things that I could spend $1,000 on.

Robert - I am taking the NYIP and think it is worth the $750 or so that I paid.
There has been several other threads on NYIP on this forum, most of them are positive.

I "graduated" from NYIP in 1978. The courses at the time were excellent and even for a correspondence course (back in the Dark Ages...), included lots of personal assistance from the instructors.

They have been around for a long time. I took it in the 1960s. The difference between NYI and books is the feedback. Of course, you can get feed back from various critique sites on the Net, but the qualifications of the critics and the usefulness of the critiques on the Net will vary greatly. Too much of it is "gee, great model" or "I really like this" type critiques that really don't help you develop or improve your skills whereas that is the purpose of NYI. I understand that NYI is still primarily film based. I did see on another forum recently that they are working on a digital course and dropping out the wet darkroom portion. If you do not shoot film, I would wait for the new course material before signing up.

I actully love this NYI course is answering all the question that I had before and one was their to answer them. Is easier that just searching and looking... you have everything you need. and the course does have instructers and have some lessons nd photo projects that you send and they send you a recorded audio detailing your work and how to improve it. Anyone that need to learn more and dont want to be searching for books etc this is you course I love it and you also get a certificate and with books that you buy you dont get all that....

It is a little pricey and if you are a very disciplined person. If you stick it out for the whole course it just might be worth the money. My problem was doing the assignments. I signed up for the "Famous Photographers School" back in the 60's. Their materials were excellent and their staff included Richard Avedon and Phillipe Hallsman. My problem was completing and sending in the assignments. I don't think I finished more than a half dozen assignments. I started hanging out with local pros and assisting when I could. I learned a lot more and at a faster rate than the course. I think I still have the books if anyone wants them.

I've been working through the course for a while. Unfortunately time has been limited for me so I haven't been able to finish the photoprojects and turn them in, except the first one. The material is good and you get a lot of audio and video material as well. I do a monthly payment of $35 or something like that.

Would I start it now with what I know now and didn't know then? Probably not, but when I think about it, I'm not sure... When I started, about a year ago, I was pretty green and didn't know much;) The course has helped me figure out _what_ I need to work on and how to approach it and also what to look for in books about photography. I have read through all the material, watched the DVDs and listened to most of the audio. I, personally, much prefer audio or even better, video, to learn from rather than books. It works better for me. With audio, video and printed material, they cover pretty much all communication methods;)

Best regards,
