Anyone here dry mount, or dry press your photos by yourself? If you do what do you use? And can you dry mount to cardstock paper, or only to foam board? | | | | | Sponsored Links | Premium Members do not see Google advertisements. SIGN UP today and help support our community.

I'm not sure about dry mounting, but I frequently use a photo spray adhesive to mount photos to foamboard before framing. The same could be used to mount on cardstock.
It is made by 3M and specifically designed for both B&W and color photo prints. Quote:
3M™ Photo Mount™ Spray Adhesive
Developed for mounting all types of black-and-white or color photographs, 3M™ Photo Mount™ Spray Adhesive is photo safe, strong, clear and non-staining.
It can be applied to one or both surfaces. The bond is immediate, extremely strong and permanent.
Common Uses:
Mounting art prints, illustrations, photographs, posters and maps
General purpose memory keeping and scrapbooking

my wife uses the 3m stuff all the time for her kids art work in her art class. it works great and does not damage the photo or art work. Plus she used it for MANY years in her other jobs in graphics

I dry mount and UV Spray all my prints myself, in the studio. If you do not have a hot press, you will probably be better off using the spray mount, as a large press to do 16 x 20" Prints and so on is about 1K$. Not to mention HEAVY and requires alot of space.
Your mount board doesn't have to be foam core. In fact, I prefer NOT to use foam core. I get all my mounting materials from Consolidated Photo Packing in El Paso, Tx. They sell single, double and triple weight boards ready to hit the press or pressure sensative.

Thanks Coby. I am actually looking for a hot press, as my buisness requires me to mount all of my work, luckly my largest prints are only 11x14 and 12x12, so I can get one of the smaller press, do you have a reccomendation of the brand?

i have to dry mount all my work at school on a mount board.
i really dont enjoy it cos i've burnt a few prints and its just an anxious process.
cant comment on the brand but the ones i use have a notorious problem of temperature fluctuation. It'll jump 200 to 250 degrees in no time so you may wanna look for a brand which can hold its temperature the best.

Hey Cristy,
Sorry so slow, but have been outta town on a wedding and just got back to the studio.
I use the Seal, Inc. Masterpress 500T. They are one of the best, workhorses of the industry.
Mine is a 24" x 36" but I am sure you can get them in smaller sizes. Temperature control shouldn't be a problem. It is just like any other piece of equipment...test it first and KNOW what you are dealing with.

Thanks Coby.
Might you have an idea where I could use one and test it out before I purchase one? or even rent some time with one?

Not unless you are in Houston, specifically, Texas City south of Houston! LOL
Here is one from Adorama: http://www.adorama.com/SE210M.html
Is smaller than mine, but same brand and set up.

I have always dry mounted to mountboard...acid free. For foam board, I used a cold mount press. Call your local pro lab and find out what process they use. Be careful to match the temperature and mounting tissue to the kind of paper you are using. Fiberbased papers can take a higher heat.

I bought a smaller press a few months ago and now i am looking for a bigger one. You can pretty much mount what every you want to just about any board. just dont spray a print first then try to mount it.
If you want to play with one your more then welcome to come up Austin and give mine a try.
I would go with a seal or mcdonalds.
get out ebay and you might get lucky to find one close so you can pick it up yourself.
Of course your going to need a rotatrim to trim tissue and prints.
