hey david

i have never took pics at an astros game, guess it would depend on if the roof was open or not. I too use a Nikon D50 and have shot several minor league games. Here is what I do

1) Shoot In Manual Mode
2) General most of my shots taken are between 600-3200 but as it got darker outside and more light in the stadium, i shot around 125-250. I just play around till I find something that works.

Have fun with it. Cant wait to see what you come up with. I have a few shots from my last outig with EXIF data on my pbase account if ya want some addtl ideas. The one thing I would recommend is a monopod to take to give you some stype of stableazation. I had trouble with some shots and wish I had it. I got one for my bday but havent used it yet at the ballpark.

Hope this helps.

I shot a few games from different locations. Used my Canon 20d and 70-200L f/2.8. I've got one game posted.

Check out pics and EXIF data. http://sonnycantu.smugmug.com/gallery/1407688. Nothing really special about my pics. Just had fun shooting.

Well thats no fun! I know at the minor league level I have never had a problem, but then again, maybe they are just trying to fill the seats...LOL

I would recommend bringing just a point and shoot. At thirty rows up your not going to get much with a slow 300mm. Even on the field with my 70-200 I still have to crop heavily to get anything useful.

From just left of the opposition dugout. ISO 100 (only) camera. Full auto. But all turned out to be taken at F2.8, 1/60th. Each shot of Clemens is from a different windup and throw, as that camera could not take multiple or quickly.

I went to a ranger game about 10 days after getting my 30d. Rented a 70-200 2.8, (which I later fell in love with and bought), and a 2x converter. The 2x converter really killed my pictures. Regardless, I was able to get some decent first time pictures. My settings didn't seem quite right but still satisfactory for my enjoyment.

couple

rest are at www.ZBallantine.com

try different setting and see what works... my noise ninja saved my life on a few photos.

Edit: Dumb me! You're at the game now!

??? Home already? Hope you at least listened to the end of the game on the way home! (Of course, YOU might live close 'nuff to only have a 5 minute commute from Minute Maid!)

haha, we left a little early. we walked around the stadium a lot to get as many angles as possible... and we noticed that the clouds were really dark. so we decided that we'd rather not get caught in the rain. i live about 15 minutes, i caught the end of the game at home :)

ill definitely make it back out there. hopefully closer seats... maybe better glass ????
