Excellent PhotoShop class. - 07-12-2006, 10:44 PM

I want to thank Pete Quinn for holding a very informative "elementary" photoshop class this evening. And, to thank DavidTXS for hosting those of us in attendance.
Pete is normally a pretty quiet guy, but once he gets rolling, hold on to your laptop and pay attention. Everyone came away knowing that they had picked up some techniques that would certainly make their next photos print, and show better.

Thanks guys for effort above and beyond.

Thanks Tom, and the guys from the other thread, for the kind words on the class. I had a lot fun. Photoshop classes always kind of take on a life of their own because thare are so many ways to approach the same problems. I hope that eveyone took away a few tips that will help them in the long run.

Let's do it again sometime!

Pete, let me know when you are going to do this again. I would like to be a part of this. I have Photoshop loaded on my laptop and could follow along (providing I am not to far behind everyone else).

Like I said in the other thread, I learned very useful stuff when it comes to layers and masks. If the class is offered again it might be useful to solicit the attendees here on the board as to what topics they want to have covered. That way the targeted stuff can be covered up front leaving time at the end of more of a free-flowing Q&A.

-OR-

Just state up front, "These are the topics we'll cover: A) Using the Bride, B) Layers and Masks, C) Sharpening techniques, D) blah, blah, blah...."

Just a thought. Still a very good class and I'm glad I went.

Pete/David..... will your next class be basic again or will you be stepping it up.... I need the basic. I guess you will have to see where the most interest is at that time.

How many came to the class?

Did you find a screen and projector that worked out okay? Sometimes I can help with that stuff. we have some demo gear where I work and may be able to borrow for it for one evening. We rep Stewart Filmscreen out of California.

I will check, I may have an older (in good shape) screen that could be donated. One of the guys here was going to take it home but never has.

There were 9 there + Pete. I was the only one without a laptop but that wasn't a problem. Took plenty notes and looked over someone's shoulder.

Just a thought. Still a very good class and I'm glad I went.

The reason I didn't solicit specific areas from possible attendees is becasue there are so many things that you can do and with people at different levels of proficiency I thought it would be better to show some simple tips for importing RAW files and some simple techniques that anyone can use on almost any image. That and I agreed to show what I knew. If I had solicited requests I may very well have ended up trying to show areas of the program I had never used. As it was, we found out that many of the attendees had never worked with layer adjustments or masks. We ended up spending more time there than I had planned but I did that rather than to brush over it just to cover some agenda I had put together. I have been to Photoshop seminars that last all day and you get so much information thrown at you that it's overwhelming. We stayed on one area that almost everyone there hadn't used and we played with it until most folks seemed comfortable with how they (layer masks and adjustments) worked and why they can make your (image) life easier. Hopefully that was worth the drive over to David place.

You could spend days alone on masks, or cloning, or any other PS feature. It is just that powerful. As I stated at the beginning, I would be showing techniques that I use frequently and that there are plenty of other ways to arrive at the same result, but these work for me.

Levels mask? Creating a mask and then using the threshold tool to set the mask?
