resizing images help - 07-28-2006, 10:11 AM

OK I'm having a stupid attack this morning and can get this right. I need to submit some images for the web and the restrictions are as follows:
Images must be in jpeg format and should be at 72 dpi. Images must be at least 200 pixels in each direction (wide and tall). Images must be less than 1 megabyte

OK, so 72 dpi is no problem, but for the life of me, I cannot get my images below 1 MB. What am I missing in the image resize option to get this???

Whichever program you are using, try lowering the Q for quality to 80% or whatever number will lower the megabyte size. I don't have Photoshop at work, so I don't recall those numbers.

Nathan,

What are you using to resize your images? If you use IrFanView (free utility), you can set it to automatically set the DPI and resize the image so your specifics.

For web page development, generally when you resize you can save as .jpeg qulity 8 or higher. I.e. when attaching a photo to this site , I use dpi72 longest side 800 pixels and quality 8.

In the save dialog, change the quality slider down to about 6 or so.

Everything I post here is resized to (at most) 550pix, 72dpi, and quality level of about 6. Gets me images of about 80K in size.

Nathan
may be your initial images are just huge ??? How many mb's ?

be sure you are checking the image size after you have closed PS. I.E. look at the image size directly in the file you saved it to. You may be surprised. The photo I posted here is 700 X 460 and 110kb.

In PS CS2 press:

SHIFT+CTRL+ALT+S
I think this will Save for Web then select your format and quality

To resize a photo in PS CS2 for web viewing purposes:
1. Go to 'Image' to 'Image Size'.
2. Place a check mark in the 'Scale Styles', 'Constrain Proportions', and 'Resample Image' boxes in the 'Image Size' window. 'Bicubic' should be selected for 'Resample Image'.
3. Change the resolution to 72 'pixels/inch'.
4. Change the width to 5 'inches' (this should give you an image size of 5x7.5" if the original image has not been cropped).
5. Save as a jpeg file.
6. Upload image.

BTW, Tom. Love your tulips. Is this picture untouched or did you photoshop to create the glow? It is beautiful. Love the perspective.

Thanks..

everything is photoshopped one way or another...

some are just converted from raw, etc.

some are highly worked to get the desired results.

The tulips are somewhere in between.
