photographing old slides? - 08-02-2006, 10:34 AM

I have a bunch of old family slides I've been wanting to put up on a screen and simply snap digital photos of. First few from a few feet where projected on a piece of foam core and came out better than expected. Just wondering if anyone has done much of this? Any hints, tips, suggestions (lenses especially).. Arlon

This slide duplicator will fit your rig, be sure it will go 1:1 and is suitable for a D50(some of these require 35mm cameras): http://porters.com/Merchant2/merchan...Category_Code=

You can also just scan the slides or have it done. Check with your local labs.

If you are a do-it-yourselfer: http://users.iafrica.com/m/mc/mcollett/brsd/

While you're at this project, you may want to read up on photo restoration because slides fade. Info will be with photo books and Photoshop books at the stores.

I'd tried several ways to do just that, both with film and digital. Did not like my results. Then a couple years ago got an Epson 2400 scanner, with lid-light-strip and film/slide mask-holder. This is a 1977 Kodachrome slide I took in S. Korea. I think it turned out pretty good with the scanner!

Great ideas. TxHummer, that picture quality is fine for what I'm after. Also hadn't thought about just putting them on a scanner.. I like the lens "duplicator" for the camera too. Like to see the results of that set up. Arlon

Armed with the "slide duplicator" key word I found a zoom t-mount duplicator on ebay NIB for $25 (buy it now). For that price, I'l give it a try. If it doesn't work I'll use it for a trot line weight or something.. Thanks again for the tips. Arlon

several manufactors make slide and film scanners. they are not cheap, but people buy them. there is probably a good reason they go this route. if you cant justify the cost of a new one, look at one that is 2 or 3 years old???

Arlon, Last week I put up a scanner for sale for $650.00. I will sell it to you for $500.00 if you are interested. I just want to get rid of it. It is in perfect shape. It is a MicroTek ArtixScan 1800f. I bought it used from Scott R in Dallas. He does a lot of large format work but was moving and sold off a lot of his gear. He is a perfectionist and had the scanner calibrated several times to get it the way he wanted it. I only used it one time. I sold all my LF gear so I do not need it anymore. It has a slide holder. I think it will hold a dozen or so slides in the tray.

I would definately go the scanner route. You will get a much better quality product in the long run.
