Good video podcast at www.photoshoptv.com ...lots of tutorials. Looks like they've started charging for shows that have been available for a couple of weeks

Pay month to month ($25 I think) for unlimited instructional material for all the mainstream apps www.lynda.com

If you're into books, here are three I'd recommend:
Adobe Photoshop CS2 for Photographers: A Professional Image Editor's Guide to the Creative Use of Photoshop for the Macintosh and PC by Martin Evening

Real World Adobe Photoshop CS2 (Real World) by Bruce Fraser and David Blatner

Some people like this one, and some don't.. I like him in small doses on PhotoshopTV but I didn't buy this one because I think the guy's writing style might get on my nerves:The Photoshop CS2 Book for Digital Photographers by Scott Kelby

Not necessarily starter books per se' but they cover photoshop from top to bottom. There are lots of follow the steps books out there, but the few that I've purchased over the years show you some tricks but you don't necessarily understand "why" things work the way they do. I'm a big "why" guy, so they haven't appealed to me as much.
I'm sure others will have places to point out. There are lots of photoshop tutorial sites out there.

Some tututorials here
http://ronbigelow.com/articles/articles.htm

Kelby's book is a good beginners book except for one thing, the index is terrible. I have better luck looking for things in the table of contents.

When I first started and wanted to know what I really needed to do in PS, I went to radiantvista.com. There are a whole lot of tuts (pdfs and vids), but the one that has benefitted me most, more than any other tutorial I have ever used, is their 5 essential adjustment layer tutorial.

It is about a 20 min video, and i watched (and followed along a few times). I now use those tips in that tut for almost every pic i process.
