Transparency to Enlarged Print and Mounted - 08-09-2006, 11:08 PM

I have a 35mm transparancy (Velvia 100F) that I would like enlarged to a 16x20 print and mounted on foam board. What lab (in Houston) you would recommend and what service should I ask for? I'd like to retain as much "pop" of the slide as possible. Will I lose part of the image when enlarged, or is this handled digitally? As you can tell, I'm pretty clueless about this. Thanks for your help.

Ilfochrome/Cibachrome print - 08-10-2006, 01:57 PM

The ultimate print from a transparency is via the Ilfochrome (formerly Cibachrome) process. I don't think anyone in Houston is making Ilfochrome prints. There are several labs left that make the prints. GOOGLE can find them. If the transparency is worth a 16x20, Ilfochrome is the answer.

WELDON COLOR LAB

ps: These are real, optical, wet process prints. Not a computer approximation of your original.

you will lose approxamately 1/4 inch of the slide to get a 16x20 print. 35mm enlarges to 16x24. we can print up to 30" wide by 100 feet long and foam mount. we're in the North Houston area.

Thanks; I'm assuming Ilfochrome is unfortunately an obsolete technology. I know Holland Photo in Austin use to do them, but recently discontinued. I'd rather be able to work with a local lab and explain what I'm looking for. Can I get a high res scan of the slide and then have it digitally enlarged and then printed/mounted without affecting the crop?

you can feel sorry for those that don't.

I have several hundred underwater slides I shot 30 yrs. ago. Have been thinking about going thru them and getting some scanned. Can you suggest anyone in Houston area?

When I used to be involved in photography, I lived in Dallas.
The lab we used there is Spectro Photo Labs inc, Great people.
You can do a search and get their # and see if they still do them, or you can do a search for a mail order lab that does.
The prints I have were made about 15 yrs ago, they are still amazing prints.

They are located on Louetta, west of Kuykendahl out in Spring.
They do super rez scans that can be printed up to 32x40 if you need it that big. Glossy prints that will rival ANY Cibachrome (Ilfochrome)!!! Great folks to work with......
