getting photos onto a dvd slide show? - 08-21-2006, 08:24 AM

Are there any recommendations for setting up slide shows for viewing on a TV through the dvd player? I see there are a number of pieces of software dedicated to the task just wondering if anyone has specific experience and what you might recommend or warn against.

Been copying a bunch of he old family pictures and need to start getting them into a format the other family members can enjoy. Some of the old timers are challenged to operate a dvd player so a computer is out of the question.. Got to see it on the TV.

Window Movie maker works simple and just burn it to a DVD. there are many different softwares that work but the key is to burn to a DVD and it should play on the TV for you.

I hope that helps.

Do any of these let you advance slide by slide at your own rate or are they basically run like a continous movie? Just pause, start as needed? Do they loose resolution when compared to viewing the stills on the tv from the camera itself?

Pro show gold is the way to go. If you have Microsoft Powerpoint, that will let you advance slides one at a time. Not sure if you can watch it on a tv though...maybe if you hooked up a laptop to the tv. However, Pro show gold is really the standard now.

Adobe Encore - 08-21-2006, 10:49 PM

Has any one used Encore to create a DVD slideshow?

If you have a DVD burner, you should have gotten software with it that will help you make the slideshows. I have the HP dvd840, and it came with Nero software.

There are DVD-R and DVD+R discs... You just have to be sure you are using the right kind, and formatting it correctly so that a DVD player will be able to read it.

Bug, Thanks. I have Nero but haven't looked at it or even thought about it. Will look into it.
I did make a vcd with some older hp movi maker software I had. It worked ok but the rsolution of the pictures on the slide show was a fraction of what the resolution was viewing them directly from the camera. Also didn't put too many pictures on the cd so dvd would be a better solution I think. Thanks all for the ideas. I still plan on getting a copy of the proshow gold, just may not have to do it tomorrow. Arlon

I"ve tried this two years in a row with all my years photos. I finally learned this last time, that some dvd players do not support jpg format. that's why some disks work in some dvd players and some players won't read it. I have used windows movie maker, and went out and bought the nero program to make dvd's on regular cd's. Windows movie maker works better for me.
Last year I bout pulled all my hair out because windows movie maker was locking up. I had to go back and reduce all the photos like you would save for web so that they'd fit on the program. Computer was using all of it's CPU 100% so it was runnin super slow....basically lockin up and not doin anything.
so you might want to check the dvd players you'll be sending disks to, to see if they will read jpg files.
Hope this helps

I use Adobe Premiere and Encore... it takes some reading and trial and error but has a lot of functions and effects.

I use Windows Movie Maker and then burn the DVD with Sonic's "My DVD". Actually, "My DVD" has the ability to handle the whole project, but I just like Movie Maker's simplicity and straight-forward approach.
