CRW vs CR2 ??? - 08-23-2006, 10:24 AM

When I shot RAW with my 300D the files were CRW. With my new 20D shooting in RAW the files are CR2. What's the difference?

One thing I noticed, I can only open both with PS Elements 4.0. For some reason I can't open the CR2 files with my older version of Photoshop CS.

Thanks.

Both CRW and CR2 are Canon's proprietary file formats for storing raw image data. It takes Adobe some time to catch up with the converters, and that's the reason why elements 3.0+ and CS2 can do CR2s and why older elements and CD cannot.

Maybe you can download some updates from Adobe to make CS raw converter work with the CR2 files, or alternatively you can use the software that came with Canon to perform raw conversion. If you have PS Elements 4, you can convert the file there and work in PS CS if that's your preference.

Yes, this requires the ACR update from Adobe be downloaded and placed in the correct folder for Photoshop to be able to read the latest RAW file formats.
