Good grief, no way. That was a hundred years ago.

This is one of those things that got engraved on my grey matter. I am sorry, but I can't remember any titles. The information in the books was reinforced one on one by a great teacher.
The theory is that you want to avoid optical illusions. As was pointed out above, when all 4 sides are equal, the top looks wider no matter where the picture is relative to your eye level. Way back in the Dark Ages I remember an exhibit of 4x5 contact prints that were displayed in large mats, maybe 16x20. The top and side margins were equal and a very wide lower margin. When viewed from the proper distance, all you saw was the photograph and a small border of neutral mat. The effect was very dramatic.
