i want to have some of my prints done in a nice 20x30 poster, but wanted a nice frame around them with my name and location of the shot. i came up with the pic below. i was always taught, in the 4 years of high school photography i took, to add a little extra to the bottom when matting pictures, so i did the same here. what do you think of it? how do you think it could be improved? thanks.

I'd probably make the type around 50% smaller and also thinner if that's an option.
I think when printed at poster size it will look way too big. You don't want it to detract from the image. You want the viewers eyes to go to the fish first, THEN notice the text. You might even want to double check the thickness of the line around the image. I'm just saying because I've done the same thing and been surprised at how thick/large things look when actually printed full size.
Also, I agree with having more space at the bottom but am I the only one who is bothered by LESS space at the top?

It looks great to me, but I was told during a pagination shortcourse that serif type is easier to read than san serif, and it's easier on the eyes.

I would make the space at the top the same as the space on the sides. I would also turn down the opacity on the border and the text to about 75% so that the bright white of the text and border do not interfere with the main content (the fish) which also has white in it.

Is "By:" really necessary?

Justin,
I think it rocks... but the bottom border needs to be the same size as the top one. It just looks a little "off" to me. But it is awesome... I'm stealing it!

- Wil | Nope. Doesn't work. Walk into any museum or gallery displaying prints or photographs and you will see the bottom border wider than the other 3 sides. There are whole chapters in books devoted to the subject.

No worries. I am frequently wrong too.
I wouldn't know either if I hadn't had the good fortune to spend 2 semesters with an excellent design teacher and artist way back when. A good frame shop should have examples as well.

The reasoning behind the "salon matting" is that in a museum or gallery, the prints are usually mounted high and above eye level. If you have an even border, it gives the optical illusion that the bottom is too short. When the print is hanging above eye level, it will look even all the way around if you use salon matting. I would make the print way smaller and use a copywrite symbol before the name. Make a copywright symbol by holding down the "alt" key on a PC and typing 0169 and then let up on the "alt" key and the © will appear. Great Image by the way!
