Printing Portraits - 08-29-2006, 10:32 AM

Hello. I'm new to the photography business and am looking for the most cost effective, and of course quality way to print portraits for customers. I'm offerings sizes from 4x5 up to 24x30, and larger formats upon request. I'm having a hard time figuring out this end of the process and would much appreciate any wonderful professional advice that you may have.

Thanks!

I use Millers/MPix. They have a pretty good turn around time and I think there work is great and not bad price wise! All of my customers have been quite happy with them. If you go to www.mpix.com you can order a free sample of the paper they use to have a look at the quality.

i use photoreflect for online viewing of the proofs by my customers.

they order through photoreflect, which is a turnkey service that will sell, print, and mail the pics to my customers.

you can choose any lab in the US that's affiliated with the photoreflect/labtricity setup-- there are a gazillion.

basically, i upload images, proof the orders when they come in, and photoreflect sends me a check once a month with the profit (they take out their fee and the lab fees). you set your own pricing, so your profit can be pretty good for not having to mess with the printmaking process all that much. www.photoreflect.com

I've just started using Millers as well, I'm very happy with it so far! I'm getting a 20x24 back from them this weekend, I'm excited to see how it will look.

www.smugmug.com works well with me. The pro account is $149 a year... it was $99 but I think they just raised it. Check out my site on there to get an idea.

Personally, I've been very pleased with ExposureManager (www.exposuremanager.com). They offer a service similar to what's been described above, they cost $99/yr., plus they are one of the sponsors of TPF. Their customer service rox and they make it very simple to create and maintain your own website.

MPix or WHCC are both great! I've had no problems with either and the turnaround time is fast! (a day or two)
