Any tips to get rid of smoke in fireworks ?? - 09-04-2006, 11:01 AM

Shot some fireworks last night at Addison is there anyway to get rid of some of this smoke in the shot ? I like the shot except for the smoke it was during the finale so it was a pretty big explosion

I just kept boosting the contrast and then darkening it. And then I sharpened it. It didn't work that good I guess. ...Bob

Fireworks pictures. - 09-04-2006, 11:54 AM

David, I like to take fireworks pictures also. I will shoot hundreds of pictures and consider myself lucky to get one keeper. I shoot at about f11 or f16 and set the shutter speed to 5 seconds. You can listen to when it gets shot out and then try to time it so that the shutter is open when the firework explodes. I usually just keep clicking until there is no more room on my 1 gig card. This is one I took in July. ...Bob

I don't see it as a problem. The smoke is part of the moment of time the shot captured.

After all smoke is part of fireworks. A photograph is not of perfection but of the moment.

Think about how to work with the smoke.

Twenty out of 300? I think I'm doing good if I get 2 out of a 100 I'll even move from bridge to ACR and on to photoshop.

Smoke - 09-04-2006, 12:04 PM

I agree with you Mr. Stovall. It is a simulation of warfare and to be real there would have to be a lot of smoke. Like in this one here. ...Bob

Here's my version. What I did was take the overall image and raise the black point a bit in levels and lower the white...which effectively boosted the contrast a bit and helped with the smoke as well as getting the background to be more of a pure black. Then I selected the area most affected by the smoke with a 30 pixel feather...I copied it into a new layer and did the same thing again with levels. Then I did it again selecting from the new layer. Then I flattened everything and went in and burned the smoke left over down a bit more. I think it came out pretty decently!
