"THM" format? - 09-05-2006, 12:45 PM

One of my older Lexar 133x 1gig cards did not burp up its vacation pictures like the rest of my other assorted cards did so I ran it through the Lexar 'Image Rescue 2.0' program to see if that would recover the pics. It did in fact, come up with more than 100 images noted as RAW but the suffix is .THM which I can't seem to find anywhere. Oddly enough, I very rarely choose RAW so I have no clue what's going on or how to convert the THM format to something else that my computer will read in ANY program. I'm reasonably sure that I didn't shoot a whole card of RAW images as I tend to use it sparingly even when it's more appropriate. I've tried the standard Canon program that came with the camera, Photoshop Elements 4, MS Digital Photo (whatever), and maybe one more picture program with none even recognizing the format or the images. The camera used was either a Canon 20D or a Canon Rebel XT.
Help?

Steve W

ps: As much as we all worry if one brand of card is more reliable than some card name we've never heard of, I have 3 or 4 brands in both 1 and 2 gig and my two Lexar 133x "pro" 1 gig cards are the only ones that have ever given me any trouble with corrupted images. I don't know if that's a clue or signifies something else entirely...

A raw image file has 2 files associated with it, 1 of them is the .THM file. Actually I think the THM file is just a simple thumbnail file for viewing the image prior to conversion in the RAW editor. Without the other companion file it is useless.

Ahhhh, so any images contained in the files are probably worthless even if I could see them... Thanks for the info ken.

Steve,

You may want to use a "real" data recovery tool that will examine the CF card. To a computer, the CF card is just another storage device like a hard drive so you can use hard drive recovery tools on it. I assume you have a card reader?
