engagement pictures help! - 10-17-2006, 01:44 PM

I have been aassigned the task of shooting some engagement photos this weekend in college station. the requested locations have been on campus at the admin bldg and at pebble creek country club. Has anyone shot at either of these places? The time of day will be around 4 PM. I have a Canon 30D with the 580 EX Speedlite and the basic 17-55mm that came with it as well as the canon f/1.8 85mm that I recently purchased. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated, esp. about settings at that time of day. TIA.

sunset is at like 6:45... it's gonna be pretty bright at 4 unless you have a cloudy day. be sure to use plenty of fill flash to compensate for the sun :)

on a clear day, your best light is the hour before sunset... so be sure to use that hour in a nice place, and don't spend that hour traveling!

the lobby of rudder tower is also a beautiful place to take silhouette pics of the couple if front of the curtains.

pm me and i'll send youlinks to my CS e-pics.

I am curious? do you have to obtain permission to photograph at those places, especially on the campus? I recently photogrphed a high school tennis team on the campus of UTPB, and about a week before the scheduled date, I checked with the security people who informed me that anyone making photographs on any UT campus must have written permission (which was done).

Just wondering, as I say, and ever so curious. I know getting permission is a PIA.

Stacy (stacyreeves) has done a lot of engagement pictures, so I would shoot her a PM about it.

i have never asked permission to shoot on campus, and have never heard of anyone having that particular issue.

the only campus i have ever really heard people have issues with is rice university... but there, you have to be registered with rice as a professional photographer and schedule your shooting time on campus with them.

I visit A&M once in a while, so I am glad to know that. I suppose it is just a UT policy that a photographer has ot have written permisison.

Thanks

Permission depends on where you are - a country club usually has different requirements than a college.

One thing to consider at that time of day is the sun - it will be really harsh light. You might want to find areas in shade so you dont blow your highlights out. You can have an assistant use a reflector for fill. Good luck!

Holly, thanks for the advice. I had very few good pictures out of about 100 I took. Lighting was the key issue:(

I shot at UT Brownsville one time and it went completely smoothly...some administration guy even helped us out a bit! It was kinda an on a whim thing so getting permission wasn't a real option.
