Do you mean like this? - 12-04-2006, 08:49 PM

All were shot with 50mm/1.4 lenses at ISO 400. The first two at 1/60 sec. & the last at 1/15 or 1/8, I can't remember exactly. I just remember it was S L O W.

It was night. What places are you talking about? Indoors after dark is indoors after dark. Low light is low light. The principles remain the same. Fast lens. High ISO numbers. Fastest shutter speed you can get away with.

Smoke doesn't have much to do with it except maybe add some atmosphere.

1600 is very usable on the 5D and 3200 depending on the way the noise looks may are may not need a touch of NN.

That is good to know. I'm still tethered to obsolete sensor material like Fuji Superia 1600 and either Ilford or Kodak 3200 B&W. Of course there are ways to make good old Tri-X a speed demon as well. I keep reading about folks who LOVE Fuji Provia 400 pushed to 1600 & 3200. I need to find a lab that can do that.

Back on topic: Did you know that you can buy a perfectly good rangefinder P&S film camera with a really nice 50mm/1.7 lens for under $50? Load it with some fast film and explore the night! Indoors or outdoors. It will fit in your pocket too!

I shoot a lot of concert shots at local night clubs and bars with my 5D. I shoot in a higher ISO and it works very well.

Wayne,
How did you get the images so clean (of noise)?

Noise? I can't hear a thing!

It's obsolete film. Kodak BW400CN in the first two and Ilford XP2 Super for the third. Both ASA 400. Wal-Mart processing and scanning. Adobe Lightroom greyscale conversion to get rid of any color tinges.

Like I said earlier, if I ever stop working so much and get really adventurous, I'll move up to faster film. My biggest problem is that I don't get out enough.
