Book to introduce 14 year old to photography - 12-17-2006, 04:03 PM

A friend's 14 year old daughter is very interested in Photography and I was ask to suggest a book for them to give her for Christimas about cameras, basic photography, etc.

Suggestion? I thought about Peterson's book on exposure.

I'd reccomend "Photography" by Barbara London and John Upton. It's pretty much the standard book for high school and college.

Brand new (8th) edition is about $90.

But I'm sure you could find a 6th or 7th edition at any used bookstore for far cheaper.

As far as I'm concerned...that book is the beginners bible.

Well... it's time to get back in the game.

The National Geographic "Field Guide" series. They have "People and Portraits", "Landscape", "Birds", etc. Just depends on what her interests are. They can often be found at Half Price Books for cheap. Half Price Books is a good source for prior editions of the London & Upton "Photography" book at much reduced prices versus a new current edition.

I think it would help to know the kid a bit better.

There are some books that would be excellent for the right person. For example, Horenstein's B&W Photography is a great book- IF you're doing B&W film photography. For general digital applications, it would be almost useless. An average 14-year-old that is "very interested" in photography is likely to have already thought to peruse the library and may or may not be familiar with basic exposure, f/stops, etc. Consider a gift certificate to Barnes and Noble or other local bookstores instead.

I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by,
and then it petered out and I had to retrace my steps and wasted half a day.
