I have a family of five who would like their picture taken.
Is there a "standard" pose for a family group?
I have seen the pyramid type shot and the double row but I want to know if there is anythign else exciting to try.

Thanks!

I don't think there is anything standard anymore. I like the more casual poses, i.e. family sitting on the floor and photographer on a stool or ladder looking down at them or if outside family sitting on grass with mom and dad sitting tall behind the kids and the kids sitting "indian" style or even laying down, depending on size.

Just get creative and tell the family to have fun. You'll come up with something good!

Good luck!

Learn from the master. I was introduced to this site on the DP Review forum by Chuck Gardner. If you spend any time there reading, you'll find Chuck an expert at portrait photography and lighting.

Chuck's home page is an interesting read as well.

While I agree with some who will say the "traditional" poses can be a bit boring, I also think just winging it and making stuff up as you go along is not likely to produce great results either. Posing groups is actually quite a bit more difficult to do well than posing an individual. You might find the following book useful, I've been reading it and it has a lot of good info: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...s&n=507846

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll be making a trip soon!
