Looking for cool ideas for a drill team shoot - 01-19-2007, 02:00 AM

Having never done one, I have been asked to take some picutres of a local drill team. The person that asked me stated that the last photographer came and took pics w/a background and charged $60 dollars per kid and gave out 2 8x10's and some wallets and the other pics were up to the girl and parents. The pics were printed on site at the time of the shoot. I won't be doing this because I think I can do a better job with the pics given a little time with post processing and don't want to lug my printer on site.

The backdrops are out because I don't have any and I wanted to see about doing something different and unique. I was thinking maybe some outdoor shots or some shots on the football field or something like that. Do any of you have any ideas? I would like to get my foot in the door and see where this leads so, I want to really impress them. Thanks for any help.

Paul

Of course you need a full drill team shot so go out to the school and see if there are any monuments around the building that have siginifigance to the school or the drill team and if you can get the team on and or around the piece.

if they are individual photos also - something neat - that no one ever does b/c of the post processing - is to shoot a sequence of the girl moving with the camera taking photos in a short time. I'm sure that has a name, but I am so blanking this morning. I'll PM you a link so you know what Im talking about. Then the outdoor setting will enhance, and it also demands a higher price - even without the instant printing and lack of backdrops.

Hey Paul, since you said you've never seen that done b4, just PM me if you need help.

The camera is usually on a tripod (so the background doesnt move) then you set the camera to take photos in intervals. Later, you layer the images in photoshop and erase the correct areas to show the girl in different spots. Then you get 1 photographs with several different poses. Should be a big hit...

If you shoot in an empty stadium, the emptiness becomes very apparent.

Out where 114 goes through Trophy Club, there's a spot with some office buildings, and big colorful prismatic shapes- any photo ops there? I've never checked this area out in person.

I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by,
and then it petered out and I had to retrace my steps and wasted half a day.

Drill Team shoots - 01-19-2007, 10:40 PM

My suggestions is that in addition to the formal group shots you can take some action shots of some individuals or small groups (e.g. the officers). Ideally these can be real action shots in the field or they can be simulated if you need to slow them down. Here are some samples of what I've taken over the years.

Hope this helps with some ideas.

I will do that. I thought I would give it a shot in the next week with a test subject (ME!) I will PM if I need help. Thanks again for the cool suggestion.

Thanks everyone for the great ideas.

The multi-shot idea proposed by HotHolly also reminded me of the idea for another product you can offer with a combination of your pictures. You can create a collage with Photoshop in about 30-40 minutes. This is a little time consuming but can command good $'s since it can be poster-sized as big as you choose to make it.
