Help taking pics at Mavericks game - 01-19-2007, 05:22 PM

Well I landed some tickets to the Mavs game on Feb 22 vs. the Miami Heat. Ill be sitting 15 rows up so I figured Id take the camera and hopefully get a few good shots. Im still very new to the photography world and very seldomly has my camera left the "auto" mode... Any advice for taking some pictures?

so any suggestions? Is lightning better in AAC??? Or should I just go with auto mode and take what it gives me?

I don't know what kind of camera you are planning on taking to the game. The AAC has rules against anyone besides credentialed media taking any professional looking camera or any camera with a lens greater than 4 inches in length into the AAC. If you have any further questions you can PM me as I am on the floor for almost every Mavericks home game.

Lighting should be lots better than at any kind of kid's game.

Personally, I'd take the opportunity to shoot not so much the game but the event- get yourself, the arena, whoever is with you- lots of photo ops other than the players. You can shoot the game, but it's hard to get anything but a me-too type shot out of it.

and then it petered out and I had to retrace my steps and wasted half a day.

You will probably be fine with the S2, just turn off the flash.

Rules for Mavericks vs. Rockets games - 01-20-2007, 09:31 PM

Sounds like the policy for Mavericks games might be more lenient. A few years ago my daughter was performing with a dance team at halftime of a Rockets game and they hassled us even though all I brought was a Point & Shoot camera. They told us not to take any photos during the game and they wanted us to turn the camera in for "safekeeping" to the security office after halftime was over. I thought they were too strict for the prices they charge . I can see that they would prohibit any kind of flash photography but it sounded like their intent was prohibiting any images from the game.

Needless to say, I haven't even thought about bringing my camera to any games. Does anyone know if the Rockets rules have changed ?

What is so crazy is I had permission from the Stars. I called and they said no problem but when I got to the AAC they told me no. I finally talked to a security guy that was a little more laid back and got my Nikon w/18 - 200 VR in but it was not fun. I will not be taking another camera there.

Good luck getting yours in. I hope you have no problems.
