thanks everyone. I have a 28-75 f2.8 lense, but I am geting the feeling I should get a 50 f1.8 or maybe the 85 f1.8 lens any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Wayne Benbrook is in south west ft. worth.

I have a SB800 so I can control the flash, but would rather shoot available light.

Mike,

I figured you weren't around Houston. Practice around the house with the flash. Done right you won't be able to tell it was used. I wouldn't run out and get a 1.8 lens until you give what you have a thorough chance to see what it will do. Of course it all depends on the club and conditions. Crank the ISO up and see what happens. Back off until the results are pleasing and consistant. Get the knack of fill flash.

Good luck & share your results!

I will spend as much time as I have to to figure out how to use the flash so it isn't obvious that I am using it. Nikon does have a nice flash system so I am sure that will help.

How close to you intend to be to the stage? If right in front, I'd recommend that 50mm on the 1.5x crop body. I use my 50 on a FF and find it tight at times. I think an 85 at a smaller club right in front might be a bit tight. However, there is a place for both.

For the record, I have shot with my 24-70L F2.8 and always find myself gravitating back to the faster primes. I wouldn't go spend the money right away without trying your zoom...But I think the 50mm should be in most bags. Those last few images I posted (Back in Black) several were shot with a 50 F1.8 on a Nikon D70. The others were Canon and 50 F1.4. I believe.
