No one has mentioned the most important piece of protection: insure your valuable lenses. If you can't afford to replace it on the spot, and you can't afford to be without it, you can't afford to not have it insured.

Ask your agent about a personal articles or what is sometimes called an "inland marine" policy.

I get mine from my State Farm Agent. It's not for professional equipment.

I have my home & cars insured with State Farm. I bought additional coverage for my camera equipment. I listed each piece with serial number and replacement cost. The coverage is ALL RISK 100% replacement cost with no deductable. That means if I drop it or leave it somewhere or who knows what, if it's ruined or gone State Farm buys a new one. Cost for me is $1.34/$100 up to $15,000. As John said, non-commercial use only.

If you are a member of the Nikonians you can purchase camera insurance through them. Check their website. I carry insurance through DAN (divers insurance). They will cover camera equipment as well.

A 760 nanometer IR filter (blocks almost all visible light) plus two ND4s or a single ND4 and a polarizer.
(My camera is the Sony F717 which has "Nightshot" mode for shooting or composing in total darkness. This mode swings the IR-blocking filter away from the front of the sensor, so it's capable of daytime IR shooting without needing to be modified.)
