Find some shots you like, or better examples they like, and play around with trying to duplicate. A reflector is certainly nice, but not a necessity depending on your location and the weather. Ideally, if you can find an open shady area with some filtered light coming through maybe, you may be fine, or shoot on a light overcast day or near sunrise or sunset and you might find just the right lighting as is. Example...this shot of my daughter was taken just before noon last weekend. It's in the shade of a large oak tree, full sun in the sky, and no flash or reflector used at all. So, it can be done...and if you play around with it I bet you can get it right.
