Okay, attached is my Photo Idea. I haven't gotten around to trying it yet, and may never, so I'll put it up for your consideration.
The original idea was to pan a golf ball. Build a box that holds the camera and the sheet of glass, attach the golf ball to the glass, go to the golf course, move the whole box in appropriate direction while firing camera to get perfectly sharp ball and nicely panned background. Should work with any small object with any background, moving or otherwise.
Limitations are that if you get the velvet too big, you start blocking off the light, so it needs to be a longish lens rather than wide lens, or else have the item fairly small in frame.
The camera needs to be straight on to the glass so that the reflection of the camera is covered by the object.
