Star Trails / Star Trails - 02-23-2007, 04:45 PM

I am a film guy trying to make my way to digital. I just purchased a D200, and am curious to see if anyone has any beta on how to shoot star trails/star streaks with a digital without getting a bunch of noise.

The unfortunately honest answer is shoot with a Canon.

You can do it with a Nikon digital by taking lots of frames over time and layering them, but this is the one area that Canon has Nikon beat, cold.

Tons of stuff on the net about it. Google is your friend.

you can shoot several shorter exposures and combine them in your favorite image software to get the same effect as a single long exosure.

also stacking will help reduce noise.

Just take a series of exposures and stack them. Make the shutterspeed as long as possible without inducing too much noise. I believe I shot these at 5 minutes f4 ISO 320 then stack about 9 of 'em to get this shot. If you need to drop the time to 120 seconds to get rid of noise then just take more pictures and stack 'em.

One area where film is WAY easier. Set the shutter to B or T. Open the shutter. Lock the cable release. Go have fun. Come back in a few hours. Piece of cake.
