Keep working with the lighting, and as you practice, your son will also get more practiced at posing.

Don't worry about the background except to make sure it doesn't interfere with the subject. Unless you are going for the extremem "environmental" portrait ( and they can be very good when done well ) keep it simple.

this is done with window light filtered through a white sheer curtain.

Here is two where she is facing the windows. I'm shooting with my back to the windows. check out some of the parent magazine covers, and you'll usually see, in the eye catchlights, the photographer standing in front of a large octabox type softbox. The third one is another about 45 degrees to the windows, and you can see the reflection in the sunglasses. Probably about two feet away from the windows, with a wall about 4 foot in front of her.

Wow, great examples!!! This is awesome. I think I am getting it now. I was more worried about the background, than the lighting, I think. Between what I have seen here, and the link to the Canon website I got from another post, things are starting to make sense now. I welcome any other people to show examples of using window lighting for kid pictures. Miguel, yours are wonderful!! Thanks for sharing. On that last one with the sunglasses, was that used with the window lighting, or a light box (I really don't know what one of those are, but heard the term used a lot). Also, do you have a professional backdrop, or is that something that I can find similiar around the house?

This is an example of a lightbox, softbox, strobe. http://www.alienbees.com/busy.html There are a lot of different brands, types, and sizes. this brand is one you might hear a lot on this forum due to it being affordable and good working brand.
All the pictures I posted where all with available window light. I open the shades, I like to use my 50mm f1.4 lens set around f2 to f2.8. It blurs the background, and I make sure there is not too much stuff in the background also. Here is one of my favorite child photographers, who is know for her available light work. http://www.alwphotography.com/

Here is a view of what the room looks like. I didn't have the sofa in there with the earlier pictures. My daughter is in the area I'm usually in to take the picture. The sun rises on the other side of the house, so I get a nice even light. oops, here's a little bigger pic.
