Help me please! I just got asked to help out a a second shooter at a dance compitition in San Antonio this weekend! I know only that they want me to do some action shots in a indoor hall of some sort with no flash! I will be shooting all day into the night so I will have many shots to practice with, but I could use some tips! Also I may need to buy a back up battery for my Nikon D80 I seen that there are a couple Nikon clone batterys like Delkin etc! Are these any good or should I stick with Nikon? I thank you for any help! | | | | | Sponsored Links | Premium Members do not see Google advertisements. SIGN UP today and help support our community.

Interesting. Since you did not say much other than no flash, Nikon D80 and what about batteries, I took a quick look at your profile to see what kind of glass you will be using.
I've recently had a chance to look at images taken using a D70 at ISO 1600 using slow glass. The noise was readily apparent.
Unless you are borrowing or renting fast glass and/or the venue lighting is really good, you might not be able to use a fast enough shutter speed for action shots.
If the D80 ISO 1600 noise is anything like the D70 you will want to shoot at ISO 800 or less. That, of course, impacts your shutter speed again.
I apologize up front for being a naysayer here and I do hope your images turn out better than I think they will from the information you've provided.

your right! I think I may rent that Nikon f2.8 70-200 again! The guy who asked me knows what I have and thinks I,ll be fine. This came as a shock to me tonight when he asked me to do this! He has seen some of my recent stuff and thinks I will do fine. I told him I can only try to do my best! Nothing more. About the battery, its the Nikon EN-EL 3e I want to know if there was any batterys other than Nikon that were as good!

Better yet! What would be a good lens to rent that would be faster than the Sigma 70-300mm , Sigma 28-80mm and the Nikon 70-200. He said that 70mm might be to long!

Sterlingtek is a good place for aftermarket batteries. I know they cover aftermarket Canon batteries quite well. I would hope they also have aftermarkets for Nikon.
Give their website a look and see what you think.

How about the 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor or the 28-70mm f/2.8D ED-IF AF-S Zoom-Nikkor, bearing in mind that I don't know anything about them other than what can be read on Nikons website.

The D80 is much better at high ISO than the D70s was. If you can get the nikon 28-70 f2.8 it is a really great lens. That is of cours if the 70-200 is too long.
good luck and have fun | | | |

Thanks Mike N80. My problem is this! If your in a low light situation and you can not use flash! How do you reach the high speed you need, is it all in the lens? what else is there you can do to get where you want!

You might want to rent/buy a 50mm 1.4 or 50mm 1.8 (the 1.8 is around $100) for the event. That should give you decent shutter speed at ISO 800/1600 depending on how much light is available.
