The real basics of making a picture... - 04-22-2007, 06:26 PM

I had not read Ben Lifson columns at RAWWorkflow.com in a few months and have been catching up today.

Lifson here touches on the real basic of photography, composition. Forget photoshop, f-stops, ISO, this lens or that lens. If you don't get the composition right, it won't work.

If you've never read Lifson start now or if like me been away for a while get back to his pages.

Here a taste of what's in store for you:

" "A picture’s success is directly proportional to the picture’s ability to “hold the eye and soul of the observer.” The quotation is from On Painting by the 15th-century Italian Renaissance humanist, mathematician, architect and painter Leon Battista Alberti—the historical figure who gave rise to our term “Renaissance man.” The expression occurs twice in the treatise. Both times, “eye” comes before “soul”. This stands to reason. We can’t be moved by a picture we can’t see. We can’t be moved deeply by one that doesn’t keep us looking at it long enough for its message to reach us."

"The market wants a Leica to be a Leica: the inheritor of tradition, the subject of lore, and indisputably a mark of status to own."
Mike Johnston
