But they are only useful if you use Canon's DPP and IMHO it lacks as a raw processor when compared to ACR, C1 or Lightroom.

Are the styles not applied if shooting jpegs, and therefore your raw processor would not be a factor??

They are applied to JPEGs...but my bet is that John Stovall, like myself, only shoots RAW.

From the link: "But Canon's Digital Photo Professional image editing software can apply Picture Styles to Raw images, even from earlier EOS cameras that don't include the feature."

It does apply them to RAW in DPP and thus the RAW shooter to use them has to use DPP.
