Thumbs down Night time shots - 05-11-2007, 06:09 PM

I have a digital Nikon and no matter what setting I use, my night time shots of sky lines are always blurred. I could use any suggestions anyone has.

Are you using a tripod? If not, I'd say you are probably dealing with exposure times that you can't possibly hand hold and not have camera shake. For best results in shooting at night, get a good, solid tripod and some sort of cable release. Otherwise, you will always have blurred images.

If your camera doesn't have a remote option (many don't, or if you don't want to spend the $$) just use the built-in shutter timer.
Almost all digitals have timers, even the crappiest ones.

Timer+Tripod=Sharp Night Photos.

Getting good focus depends on contrast-detection, so in situations where the ambient light is very low you might need to add light for the autofocus to get a solid lock.
I shoot at night a lot, and when the distances are less than 'infinity' I sometimes have to illuminate my subject with a flashlight or a rechargeable spotlight until I get a focus-lock, then take the picture.

Also, if you camera has mirror lockup, I would suggest using it along with a good tripod and remote cable release.

It would be helpful if you tell us about your equipment as well as your current settings. Then, more specific suggestions can be offered.

I do use manual settings, don't always use manual focus or a specific f/stop. That will depend on what I am shooting. Here's one that the exposure was 25 seconds on f/8.

I agree it would help for you to post an example, so we can offer more suggestions.
