What causes halos to form around certain elements in pictures? I've checked all the tutorials I have bookmarked, checked the on line photo dictionaries, did the 'search' function here on TPF, etc., and still find no mention of the artifact other than the occasional comment, why it's present in some photos and not in others, or how to get rid of it.
If someone has information they'd share, it would be most appreciated...

Steve W | Lens design and construction and realtion of the lens to light sources. Some lenses are more prone to it than others. Here's an example of some rather interesting ones.

Sorry, no pic to share. This question is from a gardening friend who found it on one of her flower pics and asked me what to do about it. I'd heard of it before but have not experienced it in any of my own pics to my knowledge so was at a loss to answer...
Thank you John. | | | |

I had the same problem when using one of my lenses to shoot indoor sports. After trying to digitally fix images all the time, I just got another lens. Unfortunately, that's the easiest way to fix the problem, or at least it was for me.

There's another kind of halo that's an artifact of oversharpening. High contrast edges can end up with white or black halos. | | | |

Steve W | Steve,
Check out Luminous Landscape "Understanding Series" on USM. http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tu...anding-series/
I think this is what you may be referring to. It tells where they come from and how to avoid them.
