Photo clubs in the Houston area? - 05-28-2007, 10:22 PM

In reading the recent post about the NY institute there was a reference to photo clubs, so I thought that I would ask if anyone can recommend a club in the Houston area. Thanks!

There are a few, here's a link to a bunch of them: http://shoothouston.com/smf/index.php?board=3.0

The only one I had experience with is the Houston Camera Club, which I was in for 2 years. I found them a bit old fashioned though, very film centric with an average age way over 50. Also seemed a bit self centered with the same images from the same few photogs seeming to win most of the competitions. Their workshops were nice though, and they were friendly.

I think I learn more though through TPF and the meetups and get togethers we have.

I don't know what part of town you're in, but I know of two in The Woodlands, one of which is sponsored by the Methodist Church. The non-church one is www.woodlandsphoto.org and the church one is http://twumc.org/ministries/speciali...orgcameraclub/

I belong to the first one, and yes, the age skews a little on the high side, but not like Steelsun's experience. The workshops are good tho, and I've heard good things about the church-sponsored one too, just haven't dropped in yet. You don't have to be a church member, but quite a few people are.

I also heard of one based around the 1960 area. I'm sure a little searching and you could find that one.

Bill Franklin heads that 1960 Digital Photography SIG.

I've attended both the 1960 SIG and Methodist Church Photography Club (The Woodlands). I like 'em. I found them to be a very friendly environment to be in especially when one is just learning the very basics. At times, they'll bring in a guest speakers that are generally accessible only through workshops.

Houston Area Photo Clubs - 05-29-2007, 07:34 AM

I belong to the NorthWest Houston Photo Club. THey meet the first and third Tuesday of each month. The first monthly meeting is a program and the second monthly meeting is competition. We also have a field shoot once a month and a portfolio challenge once a year. We meet at Doss Park about 1/4 mile west of Veterans Memorial. For directions go to
www.nwhpc.com.

Whatever you’re looking for is looking for you, too. The catch, of course, is recognizing it when it pops up in front of you.
